In his farewell speech to the nation, George Washington urges the American
people "to promote, as an object of primary importance, institutions
for the general diffusion of knowledge, thus developing an enlightened
public opinion ". The Great Valley Chapter supports numerous
educational projects, including the following:
American History Essay Contest: Local school children, grades five through eight, are eligible to participate in this contest by writing essays on a predetermined topic. The winners, with their parents and teacher, attend our February Chapter meeting to read their essays and receive awards. One winning essay from each grade is submitted for judging on the state level. DAR Good Citizen Awards: At our December meeting these awards are presented to area high school seniors who demonstrate the qualities of service, leadership, and patriotism. One of our winners became a Pennsylvania State Society DAR winner. DAR Schools: Our Chapter helps fund several schools for disadvantaged children including the Tamassee DAR School at Tamassee, South Carolina, and the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School at Grant, Alabama. |
| The Chapter's contributions to education are partially funded by our annual Christmas Party and our Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show. |
